History

Spanish settlers founded the Mission San Jose in the Amador Valley in 1797. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and a large portion of the land in the valley was given to Mexican citizens. A town named Alisal was established in the area, and gold seekers visited the town during the 1850s. The town's name was changed to Pleasanton in 1894. The area had rich soil and became known for growing hops in the late 19th century. Movies made in Pleasanton in the early 20th century include "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" and "Tom Sawyer." Pleasanton's population increased during the 1960s and 1970s when retail and commercial centers were built in the city. A Pleasanton home buyer can learn more about the city's history here.
