History


The city of Danville, California was originally populated by Native Americans. They lived next to the creeks and camped on Mount Diablo during the hot summers. The town was settled by Americans who came to the city for the California Gold Rush. The city got its name in 1854 from the original owners's mother-in-law who was raised in Danville, Kentucky. 

The first post office opened in 1860. Only 20 people were reported to be living in Danville in 1862. The valley land was fertile and attracted more residents throughout the turn of the century. Residents raised sheep, cattle and planted crops. The community great slowly until the Southern Pacific Railroad came to town in 1891. Danville was affected by wars, the depression, Spanish flu and new immigrants during the twentieth century.
