History


San Ramon, California was once the home to Seunen Tribe. They lived near the valley creeks, lakes and streams and hunted and fished for food. In 1797 the area was established as Mission San Jose grazing land. As the story goes, the city got its name from a local native american named Ramon. He was a sheep herder in the area. The San was added to the name as is required with Spanish customs. The first American settlers moved to the area in 1850. Leo and Mary Norris purchased 4,450 acres. 

Other Americans came to the city to search for opportunities. The city grew with the arrival of the San Ramon Branch Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1891. Parks and Recreation


The city's parks and recreation department offers citizens downloadable recreation guides.  Fall and winter activities include performing arts, events, therapeutic recreation and student programs. Library programs include children and families storytimes. They also offer music concerts featuring extraordinary vocalists and ensembles. Tickets to the events are reasonable with senior citizen discounts. The library also sponsors computer workshops, science classes and crafts for kids. Teens can practice SAT test scores with practice tests.
