In the year 1772, the first original Walnut Creek homes were found when Captain Pedro Fages led a group of Spanish explorers into Contra Costa County and came across native Bolbones Indians living in the area. However, 49 years later, Spain lost its settlement claim to California through an upheaval with Mexico. In 1832, Mexico gave large land grants and four were in the Walnut Creek region. In 1849, the first settler, William Slusher, built a home on the banks of the creek just before California became the 31st state. Farmers quickly began moving into the area growing grains, fruits and nuts. The first hotel and store was built in 1855 and in 1860 a man named Hiram Penniman began to lay out the town plans. Two years later, the town was officially named Walnut Creek. The Penniman ranch house is now the Shadelands Ranch Historical Museum.
